Global Change Seminar
"It's Your Move!"

Introduction to Seminar Segment #2

Is Our Planet in Trouble?

In 1992, some 1,700 of the world's leading scientists, including the majority of Nobel laureates in the sciences, issued a "Warning to Humanity" that human beings and the natural world were on a collision course. Since then, there have been a growing number of calls from concerned individuals and organizations drawing attention to assorted danger signals. On our personal website we've accumulated a few indicators of the condition of the planet. No doubt you have your own list of such indicators. If you are doing this Seminar it is likely because you have a deep sense of unease about the times we live in and the direction we're going. Change seems uncontrolled and increasingly rapid, and there is a dearth of reliable leadership to move us collectively forward in a globally positive direction.

Segment #2 of the Seminar is intended to encourage you to think in "big picture" terms about what's happening today, and the outlook for the future. There are 4 articles to read in this Segment before coming to the Meeting Preparation work. The articles in this Segment are:

  1. Historical Perspective,
  2. Urgent Global Problems,
  3. Future Scenarios,  and
  4. Perspectives on Change.

Next: Historical Perspective
